Eight ranks attached to Guyana’s Presidential Guard Unit have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

This was disclosed by the Guyana Police Force via a press statement.

The press release said the tests were conducted randomly on the ranks within the guidelines given by the Public Health Ministry.

Those ranks who tested positive are “currently convalescing in quarantine.”

In a subsequent release the Director of Public Information and Press Service at the Ministry of the Presidency, Ariana Gordon, informed that the eight ranks are attached to the uniformed branch located at Vlissengen Road.

The ranks “are not a part of the Special Protective Service arm of the Unit. They were therefore not responsible for the close protection of President David Granger or his family,” Gordon clarified.

It was also disclosed the Head of State has been working remotely for some time and has not been in contact with uniformed members of the Presidential Guard Unit.
